Newest wave of ads on radio

A new wave of radio advertising, known as drive-by broadcasting, is being introduced to Edmonton.

AAA-1 Signs of Edmonton is selling or leasing transmitters which can broadcast personalized commercials 24 hours a day from business via low FM frequencies.

"This is going to go crazy, fast," predicted AAA-1 sales and marketing manager Gary Zawada.

He said customers can buy or lease a $2995 transmitter that can emit three minute messages or live broadcasts within a 750-metre radius.

The customers then use signs to get their customers to tune in.

The transmiters are mobile and can also be powered by cigarette lighters in vehicles.

There are about 80 low FM frequencies for companies to use, he said.

Currently, Zawada, and AAA-1 owner Wayne Sharpe, are targetting realtors, schools, restaurants, banks, tourist attractions and golf courses, among others.

"We can use it for most any application - public awareness messages, any commercial message or advertising message," Zawada said.

He said deals are pending with a local funeral home and a national burger chain.

"It's brand new to the area," said Sharpe, who has obtained distribution rights for Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. from the United States based manufacturer.

Sharpe said the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission in Ottawa has cleared the product for commercial use.

He added the devices are to be used during the 2000 Olympics in Australia, to privide traffic updates and advertising.
